The Compostela

Hello everyone!

We have finished the caminho and have arrived in Santiago de Compostela. It's so amazing!

First, we planned to make one more stop and walk into the city in the morning. But in Milladoiro they had no hotel room for us. So we decided to walk the last five kilometers on that day. And we were really fast! On the last kilometers, we were all quiet and just in our thoughts for ourselves. It was a hard way but every blister and every ache was forgotten in these last minutes. We only wanted to arrive.

That moment when you stand in front of the cathedral in Santiago and you know that you made it, is indescribable. Just amazing!

After finding a little hostel near the center, we went to the pilgrims office. There we got our Compostela. It's the official paper that confirms that you have been walking at least the last 100 km. Nevertheless, we walked all the way of course. Then we sat in a café, proud and blessed, watching our Compostela.

Our friends we met the days before and with whom we had walked together, arrived a little later in the afternoon. We spend the evening together in "Manolos". It is one of the most famous pilgrim restaurants in Santiago. So if you ever make a pilgrimage to Santiago, a visit at "Manolos" is a must! The food is really good.

We round off the evening with watching the champions league match between Bayern Munich and FC Barcelona. After this we fell into our beds, tired of the amazing day.

Santiago de Compostela is a beautiful city with lots of small streets. All the people in the city seem to be happy and you can almost see the positive energy all over the city. There are lots of gift shops with souvenirs and of course many good restaurants with typical Spanish food.

At twelve o'clock the next day, we went inside the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela and visited the pilgrims service. There were lots of other pilgrims from different nations all sitting together, watching the beautiful service, which is held in Spanish. We decided to visit the service in the evening again, because they would swing the incinense pot.

In front of the cathedral we met a few of the pilgrims we had met before. Everyone in Santiago is just happy and the "peregrinos "congratulate each other when they meet again after all the kilometers of walking.

We also took a closer look to the Cathedral after the service. It is said that the reliquaries of St. James are in the crypt of the church. Also, there is a statue of Santiago sitting on the thrown on the altar. It is a tradition to give him a hug while holding a prayer. So we did.

After walking around in the city, we wrote some postcards and in the evening we went to the service again. It was as beautiful as in the morning, but this time they swung the incinense pot. This is only happening on special days of celebration or in case of a donation of 300€. We sat in the "transept " this time. Therefore, we were afraid that the pot would hit us because we sat in the first row... Nevertheless, we are fine, nothing happened luckily;)

Our tummies said "feed me", so we had something to eat after the service with some "peregrino- friends". While we ate our burgers, we watched the second champions league game between Real Madrid and Juventus Turin. It was funny, because there were lots of Spanish people in the bar and Madrid lost although they played remis against Turin (Turin won the first game so they reached the final). Later, we visited a little bar. They played music and danced to real Flamenco and Galician folk music. It was the idea of our Swiss friend, who had visited that bar two years ago. Really interesting and we both liked it! :)

The next morning we had to get up early, because we thought that our flight was going. We said goodbye to our very good friend Andi, which we have been walking with since Rates. We had so much fun all the days, so saying goodbye was very hard.

At the airport, we realized that we were 24 hours to early... Damn! We have no idea how this could happen, but somewhere there must be a reason for this terrible mistake :) As the solution, we took a hotel near to the airport and had a regeneration day with lots of sleep.

Ps.: We don't want to forget to say thank you to all the people we have come across on this pilgrimage. The two of us had so much fun and we made many new good friends. All the experiences, sighs and friendships mean a lot to us and we will never forget this beautiful journey from Porto to Santiago:) a special thanks goes out to our good friend Andi, "der es mit uns zwei dööödelz so lange ausgehalten hat" !❤️

Hallo zusammen!

Wir habens endlich geschafft und sind in Santiago de Compostela angekommen. Es ist einfach nur toll!

Erst wollten wir noch einen weiteren Stop kurz vor der Stadt machen und am nächsten Morgen ganz gemütlich einlaufen, aber in Milladoiro hatten sie keinen Platz für uns... Also hieß es noch fünf Kilometer bis zum Ziel. Und dann waren wir waren alle in Gedanken versunken, jeder für sich auf den letzen Metern. Als wir den Berg zur Kathedrale hochhechteten, waren alle Blasen und Schmerzen vergessen, wir wollten einfach nur noch ankommen und waren so kurz vorm Ziel.

Dieser Moment, wenn du vor der Kathedrale stehst, ist einfach nicht zu beschreiben, da fehlen einem die Worte.

Schließlich haben wir uns eine kleine Pension gesucht und sind dann zum Pilgerbüro gegangen, um unsere Compostela, die Pilgerurkunde, abzuholen. Und wir sind alles, aber auch wirklich alles, gelaufen :) Glücklich und stolz hielten wir das Papier dann endlich in der Hand. Später haben wir viele von unseren Wegbegleitern wiedergetroffen und den Abend bei Manolos verbracht. Das ist eins der bekanntesten Pilgerrestaurants in Santiago, also falls ihr jemals nach Santiago pilgern solltet, ist das ein muss.

Den Abend haben wir dann mit dem Champions League Spiel Bayern- Barcelona abgerundet, bevor wir alle ins Bett gefallen sind 😴.

Santiago de Compostela ist eine wunderschöne Stadt mit vielen kleinen Gässchen. Alle Menschen sind fröhlich und beglückwünschen sich. Die positive Energie ist sofort spürbar. Überall sind Souvenirshops und viele Restaurant mit typischem spanischem Essen.

Am nächsten Tag waren wir in der Messe, wo sich alle Pilger versammelt hatten und den wunderschönen Gottesdienst miterlebten. Danach haben wir uns entschieden, am Abend nochmals hinzugehen um das Schwenken des Weihrauchkübels mitzuerleben.

Die Kathedrale haben wir schließlich auch nochmal genauer unter die Lupe genommen und natürlich auch den Santiago umarmt, wie das so Tradition ist.

Der Abendgottesdienst war beeindruckend, besonders als der Weihrauchkübel geschwungen wurde. Zeitweise hatten wir Angst, das Ding vor die Rübe zu kriegen... Dieses Spektakel findet nur bei einer Spende von 300€ oder an besonderen Tagen statt.

Der Hunger hat auch nicht lange auf sich warten lassen. In einer Bar konnten wir nebenbei das zweite Champions League Spiel zwischen Madrid und Turin verfolgen.

Später haben wir uns, auf Empfehlung von Andi, Flamenco in einer kleinen Bar angeguckt. Es hat uns auch ganz gut gefallen ;)

Am nächsten Morgen mussten wir früh raus, weil wir dachten dass unser Flug schon an diesem Morgen geht. Der Abschied von Andi fiel uns sehr schwer, weil die Zeit zusammen einfach so schön war.

Am Flughafen fiel uns dann auf, dass wir zu früh da waren. Und zwar genau 24 Stunden. So ein Mist! Wie genau das passieren konnte, ist uns noch immer ein Rätsel. Die Lösung: Hotel nehmen und Regenerationstag einlegen.

Jetzt, und diesmal war es der richtige Tag, sitzen wir im Flugzeug nach Valencia. Euch einen schönen Tag!

P.s.: An dieser Stelle wollen wir noch einmal Danke an alle coolen Leute sagen, die uns auf dem Weg begegnet sind. Wir beide hatten so viel Spaß mit euch zusammen und wir werden diese Reise von Porto nach Santiago de Compostela nie vergessen. Alle Erfahrungen, was wir gesehen haben und alle Freundschaften bedeuten uns sehr viel! Ein ganz spezieller Dank geht an unseren Schweizer Freund Andi, der es so lange mit uns zwei "Dööödelz" ausgehalten hat. Es hat uns sehr viel Spaß gemacht und die Tage waren immer super lustig!
